William Samuel Stabback

William Samuel Stabback was born in London on 24 May 1827 and started travelling at the age of 12. He arrived in Sydney in 1853 and was a digger on the NSW goldfields. He came to Orange in the 1870s. He was Mayor of East Orange Council in 1889, 1891-1893 and 1895-1897. He had an active hand in securing the East Orange Public School and also in the making of the East Orange Municipality and was a director of the Millthorpe Milling Co. and the Phoenix Cordial Factory in Anson Street, Orange.

Stabback had purchased the Phoenix Soda Water and Cordial Factory.from Josiah Parker, in 1871. It was located in the the lane off Anson Street, just before March Street. The lane is now named Stibbards Lane, raising the question of whether that is a mistake, and Stabbacks Lane was intended.

On Friday 25 February 1898 the Sydney Morning Herald reported that a valedictory was given to Alderman Stabback at the East Orange Council meeting propr to his visit to England for the benefit of his health.

W S Stabback died on 5 February 1899 aged 71. He is buried in the Orange Cemetery.

In his will (dated 1897), W.S. Stabback refers (among his property) to

  • my residence in Anson St
  • the factory and plant adjoining and at the rear of my residence;
  • the cottage adjoining the said factory and having frontage to a lane;
  • the cottage having a frontage to Anson St. and adjoining my residence;
  • the two allotments fronting March St., and situated between the cottages occupied by Messrs. Henry Lane and White.
