Thomas Joseph Dalton was born at Duntryleague, Ireland on 25 April 1820, the eldest son of James Dalton Snr and Ellen Ryan. He arrived in NSW from America in 1958 and joined his brother James Dalton Jnr in the business James had started in Orange, hence the name Dalton Bros. In 1861 he married Elizabeth Fahy and in 1863 and they built and lived in Knocklong in Hill Street. Thomas and Elizabeth had 7 children. Elizabeth died in 1877 at 34 years of age. In 1880 Thomas remarried Mary Anne Josephine Ahern. They had no children. Mary Anne died in 1911.

Thomas Dalton was the Mayor of Orange in 1877 and served as the Member for Orange in the NSW Parliament between 1882 and 1891. He died in North Sydney on 26 June 1901.
