George Weily Mayor of Orange 1873

George Weily was born in Ireland C1823. He immigrated to Australia on board the ‘Lady Peel’ in 1849 and became a mounted policeman. George was the first police constable in Orange. After leaving the police force he took charge of the Prince of Wales Hotel in Anson Street, which he had built. He served as an Alderman for seven years and became Mayor of Orange in 1873. He died in Orange in 1891.He is buried in the Orange Cemetery.
