This street was named after Sir Henry Clinton who died in 1795. He was Commander-in-Chief in the American War of Independence and was later Governor of Gibraltar.

H. Barnes was paid ₤5 by Orange Municipal Council, on 10 November 1863, for work in Clinton St.

William Hughes was given six months notice, on 22 October 1862, to remove his hut, which was in the middle of Clinton St. He must have been slow to act, as he was still receiving threats from the Municipal Council in November 1865. Similarly Peter Boyle, of Orange, was given notice by Council to remove his hut, which was situated on Clinton St, by 1 February 1869.
