In 1918 the town held its first Back to Orange Week with hundreds of former residents and visitors joining with locals to celebrate the lifestyle and heritage of Orange. Prior to this most events and celebrations centred on the opening of buildings and provision of new services. The second Back to Orange Week in 1923 proved even more successful but this was surpassed by the 1928 event which was also used to celebrate Orange being named the State’s most beautiful town in 1927. Held over the Christmas/New Year period the procession along Summer Street on Boxing Day was viewed by over 20,000 people at a time when Orange had a population of 8,610.
